Transitioning to Colemak: My Experience

A month ago, I decided to fully switch to the Colemak keyboard layout. Until then, I had been typing on QWERTY and didn’t know how to type with all ten fingers. Now, I can type at a speed of about 30 words per minute.

Why did I decide to make this change?

  • I’m digitizing my notes
  • I write documents and messages on Slack
  • I want to improve my efficiency

The training took me about 6 months. I practiced a few minutes every day until I transitioned to
using the new layout throughout my entire workday.

What do I still need to work on?

  • Typing speed (last time, I was at 30 words per minute)
  • Reducing typos when typing quickly
  • Transcribing without checking

Why you might not want to switch?

  • It requires time (more than 30 hours)
  • QWERTY is sufficient for most purposes
  • Harder to find keyboards with Colemak layout

The one situation where I switch back to QWERTY is when entering passwords. It’s helpful to see what I’m typing. 🔑
